How we make it.
*makes about 20 balls*
12 dates, pitted
¼ cup milk
¼ cup flax seed
1 cup oats
2 (heaping) tablespoons Nutella
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
Dash of cinnamon
1 cup hazelnuts, toasted and chopped
Preheat oven to 350. Chop up hazelnuts and toast on a baking sheet in a thin layer for 3-5 minutes until lightly browned. Set aside to cool. Throw dates, milk, flax seed, oats, Nutella, salt and cinnamon into a Vitamix. Blend until combined. Roll into balls (makes about 20) and roll around in toasted hazelnuts. Refrigerate and serve to reenergize. These will last in the fridge for a few
weeks so feel free to make ahead!
Why we make it.
I never make energy balls. First of all, I already have too much energy. And second, I think I've about beaten my Vitamix to an early grave with thinner things. By now though, you may know I will do next to anything for the little boy across the street. Run for miles, wear a mustache, make some date balls, sweat on the farm. I am far from the only one who feels this way in our town. This Saturday friends of the indomitable
Robert Vice are coming together to put on a high intensity intervals class on the farm to raise money for
Morquio research. I'm just bringing some date balls.
I've written before about this wonderful little boy in greater detail so for today I'll just say this: the kid is magic, and everyone around here contributes what they can to help his family win their fight against the genetic disorder that threatens his days. We make it - whatever it is - so that he can make it. That's why we all make it. You can help, too by
donating to Rooting for Robert.
